Apache TomEE has got the certification from Oracle stating that it is compatible with Java EE 6 Web Profile Specification. The Tomcat Java Servlet container forms a part of the stack of TomEE under J2EE development. The stack comes with OpenEJB (Enterprise JavaBeans); OpenWebBeans, for Context and Dependency Injection (CDI) capabilities; OpenJPA (Java Persistence API), for data access; and MyFaces, for server-side Web applications.
David Benkins, the vice president of the Apache Open EJB addressed the JavaOne Conference and said that the stack is meant for the users of the Tomcat who with some minimum software could benefit more with the help of this stack. This relieves Java development team of aggressive download of unnecessary software that is both time consuming and also requires more effort. While designing the TomEE they have always been keeping the Tomcat users in mind and so wanted to meet the demands of these users. This is a market where they have never ventured before and feel that there is potential for better progress in Java development.
The Stack comes with the inclusion of CGI which is sure to displace many of the deployments of the Spring Framework. The Spring which is more like a proprietary framework in the opinion of Belvins will provide greater flexibility through standard implementation. Oracle after the takeover of Sun and Apache have agreed to the technology compatibility kit called Java EE TCK. But there were several problems surrounding the Java SE in Java development as they were not getting the approval for it due to the restrictions on the field of use. But with the approval of TomEE by the Apache the organization has taken a major leap.
Apache TomEE is in its beta stage but that did not hinder its certification process as it went on smoothly. The designing of TomEE was done with a primary motive and that was to keep it as simple as possible and should not create any kind of architectural overhead. They also did not want to make any changes to the Tomcat and create something that will add to list of benefits for the current Tomcat Users. The entire stack for the Web profile is of around 24MB.
